  • Web-based Intervention to Reduce Alcohol Use in Veterans With Hepatitis C

    Many people who are infected with Hepatitis C misuse alcohol, which is even more dangerous for them than it is for a non-infected person. In this VA study, such individuals will be screened and given feedback on their drinking using an Internet-based program which has been shown to reduce drinking in other populations. The research team will evaluate whether the program helps Veterans drink less over time and thereby improve their health.

  • Trametinib in Treating Patients With Recurrent or Progressive Low-Grade Ovarian Cancer or Peritoneal Cavity Cancer

    This phase II/III trial studies how well trametinib works and compares it to standard treatment with either letrozole, tamoxifen, paclitaxel, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin, or topotecan in treating patients with low-grade ovarian cancer or peritoneal cavity cancer that has come back (recurrent), become worse (progressive), or spread to other parts of the body. Trametinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known whether trametinib is more effective than standard therapy in treating patients with ovarian or peritoneal cavity cancer.

  • Study of Pasireotide Long Acting Release (LAR) in Patients With Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs)

    The goal of this clinical research study is to learn if the study drug, Pasireotide LAR can shrink or slow the growth of Metastatic Neuroendocrine Carcinomas. The safety of this drug will also be studied. The patient's physical state, changes in the size of the tumor, and laboratory findings taken while on-study will help us decide if Pasireotide LAR is safe and effective.

  • Two Regimens of Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Younger Patients With Newly Diagnosed Localized Ewing Sarcoma Family of Tumors

    This clinical trial is studying the side effects of combination chemotherapy and to see how well they work in treating patients with newly diagnosed localized Ewing sarcoma family of tumors. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) and giving the drugs in different ways may kill more tumor cells.

  • Rituximab in Progressive Immunoglobulin A (IgA) Nephropathy

    This study was about IgA nephropathy, a form of kidney disease characterized by the presence of blood and protein in the urine. This study was done to determine if the medication rituximab could reduce protein in the patient's urine.

    Hypothesis: In patients with progressive IgA nephropathy an intravenous infusion of 1000 mg of rituximab on Day 1 and Day 15 and Days 168 and 182 is superior to conventional therapy in reducing 24 hour proteinuria, and slowing progression of chronic kidney disease.

  • The Gastric Cancer Foundation: A Gastric Cancer Registry

    The Gastric Cancer Registry will combine data acquired directly from patients with gastric cancer; with a family history of gastric cancer in a first or second degree relative; or persons with a known germline mutation in their CDH1 (E-Cadherin) gene via an online questionnaire with genomic data obtained from saliva, blood and tissue samples. The purpose of this registry is to gain better understanding of the causes of gastric cancer, both environmental and genetic; whether certain genomic data can predict outcomes of treatment and survival.

  • Supportive Care for Cognitively Impaired Patients and Families

    Currently almost 5 million Americans suffer from the distressing symptoms related to dementia and this number that will triple by 2050. The overall goals of the proposed project are to evaluate, in community dwelling Alzheimer's Disease Research Center participants the benefits of a 12-month nurse-led early palliative intervention on symptoms, quality of life, health care resource use. The relevance of this research to public health is that there is an urgent need to improve the palliative care of persons with dementia living in the community. This study will contribute substantially to that effort.

  • Renal Transplant Injury and the Renin-Angiotensin System in Kids (RETASK)

    In pediatric kidney transplant patients, rejection, medication toxicity and ischemia cause early and chronic renal allograft injury, which reduces graft lifespan and patient survival. Early detection of injury would facilitate prevention and treatment. The gold standard surveillance biopsy has limitations including delayed discovery of injury. No noninvasive test identifies graft injury before it is clinically apparent. This project's goal is to develop a novel early marker of subclinical graft injury to facilitate prompt recognition and treatment.

  • Radiation Therapy With Cisplatin or Cetuximab in Treating Patients With Oropharyngeal Cancer

    RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells and shrink tumors. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cisplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. It is not yet known whether radiation therapy is more effective with cisplatin or cetuximab in treating oropharyngeal cancer.

    PURPOSE: This phase III trial is studying radiation therapy with cisplatin or cetuximab to see how well it works in treating patients with oropharyngeal cancer.
