  • Pilot Study of alpha1-antitrypsin to Treat Neuromyelitis Optica Relapses

    Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare, devastating demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that has different causes and treatments from the more common demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Current NMO therapies are nonspecific and have varying and often suboptimal benefit. The investigators will evaluate whether use of alpha1-antitrypsin (A1AT, an FDA-approved medication for patients with congenital deficiency of A1AT associated with emphysema) can benefit acute attacks of NMO, improving patient disability and quality of life.

    This study will create a comprehensive, multicomponent behavioral intervention package (ONBOARD; OvercomiNg Barriers & Obstacles to Adopting Diabetes Devices).   • Phase 3 Study of FOLFIRINOX (mFFX) +/- SBRT in Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer

    The goal of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of a chemotherapy regimen known as Modified FOLFIRINOX (mFFX) alone or with the addition of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT).   • Study to Evaluate Safety, Pharmacokinetics, and Efficacy of Rociletinib (CO-1686) in Previously Treated Mutant Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Patients

    Rociletinib is a novel, potent, small molecule irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that selectively targets mutant forms of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) while sparing wild-type (WT) EGFR. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK) and safety profile of oral rociletinib; to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and/or recommended Phase 2 dose (RP2D) of oral rociletinib; to assess the safety and efficacy of rociletinib in previously treated NSCLC patients known to have the T790M EGFR mutation.

  • Prevention of Altitude Illness With Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Study (PAINS)

    This is a research study on Altitude Illness. From the information collected and studied in this project we hope to learn more about Altitude Illness, including factors that may affect and prevent the development and progression of this condition. We hope to learn if the commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, ibuprofen can prevent altitude illness. Possible participants in this study are healthy adults who indicated they would like to participate, learn about altitude illness, and desire to hike Barcroft Peak. Stanford University researchers hope to enroll about 100 participants.

  • Paclitaxel and Carboplatin With or Without Metformin Hydrochloride in Treating Patients With Stage III, IV, or Recurrent Endometrial Cancer

    This randomized phase II/III trial studies how well paclitaxel, carboplatin, and metformin hydrochloride works and compares it to paclitaxel, carboplatin, and placebo in treating patients with endometrial cancer that is stage III, IV, or has come back. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Metformin hydrochloride may help paclitaxel and carboplatin work better by making cancer cells more sensitive to the drugs. It is not yet known whether paclitaxel and carboplatin is more effective with or without metformin hydrochloride in treating endometrial cancer.

  • Preventive PCI or Medical Therapy Alone for Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Coronary Plaque

    The primary aim of the trial is to determine whether preventive PCI with bioabsorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) (early period) or everolimus-eluting stents (middle and late period) plus optimal medical therapy (OMT) on functionally insignificant (FFR > 0.80) vulnerable coronary plaque, as determined by intracoronary imaging, would result in a significant reduction of the primary composite outcome of death from cardiac causes, target-vessel myocardial infarction (MI), target-vessel revascularization (TVR), and hospitalization for unstable or progressive angina at 2 years, when compared with OMT alone.

  • Radioactive Iodide (131I) Treatment of 124I PET/CT Detected Breast Cancers

    This is a treatment protocol designed to accompany the ongoing institutional 124I PET/CT pilot imaging study for patients with invasive breast cancer. Women whose tumors express NIS [Na+I- symporter, sodium iodide symporter] and demonstrate radioiodide uptake on 124I PET/CT scans will be eligible for 131I treatment if, (1) tumor dosimetry calculations yield a cumulative radiation dose of at least 30Gy in target tumor, (2) estimated cumulative thyroid irradiation is less than 500 cGy and, (3) the therapeutic dose of 131I is in the range of 25 to 100 mCi.

  • Prognostic Value of Baseline Computed Tomography (CT) Perfusion Parameters of Pancreatic Cancer for Patients Undergoing Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy or Surgical Resection

    The purpose of this study is first, to determine whether baseline perfusion characteristics of pancreatic cancer, as characterized by CT perfusion studies, can predict tumor response to treatment by stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The second goal of this study is to determine whether baseline perfusion characteristics in those patients with resectable pancreatic cancer correlate with immunohistologic markers of angiogenesis such as microvessel density and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression.

  • Serial Ultrasound of Solid Tumor Lesions to Detect Early Response to Cancer Immunotherapy

    Primary objective is to assess whether changes in quantitative tumor perfusion parameters after 3 weeks of treatment, as measured by CEUS, can predict initial objective response to therapy, defined by current standard-of-care

    Secondary objectives are to evaluate if there is an optimal ultrasound imaging modality (CEUS or conventional power Doppler or LEAD ultrasound) or optimal time point to predict initial objective response and to assess the correlation of tumor perfusion parameters with change in overall tumor burden, change in diameter on a per-lesion basis, and with 12-month progression-free survival (PFS).
